General Atomics Energy Products (GAEP) announced today that it has more than quadrupled its backlog in research and development contracts since this time last year. The work is funded by a variety of government agencies and contractors, and includes both capacitor and power supply development programs. "Much of the work is now focused on making more robust versions of the high energy capacitors and power supplies that we are known for," explained Joel Ennis, Product Line Manager. "Such issues as temperature range and shock and vibration resistance are as important as energy density for some military applications. Solving these problems for the military will expand our commercial product capabilities as well." Some of the applications being addressed include:
In order to accommodate the greater engineering workload, GAEP is increasing its staff of engineers and technicians, and has expanded its R&D laboratory facilities, shown below.
GAEP is a leading supplier of high voltage capacitors, high voltage, high power AC/DC switching power supplies, power conditioning and pulse power systems used in pulse power research facilities, lasers, accelerators, and a variety of other applications. GAEP is part of General Atomics Electronic Systems, Inc. (GA-ESI), an affiliate company of General Atomics. The GAEP product lines, formerly part of Maxwell Technologies, Inc., were purchased by General Atomics in March 2000 and merged with GA-ESI in January 2001. GA-ESI also designs and manufactures radiation-monitoring systems, and terminal automation products and manufactures and tests synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for the LYNX unmanned aircraft system. |
